Solving Your Genealogy Download Problems
If you are just getting started in genealogy and want to download family tree maker software from an online website, you should have no problem finding some online. But, many people that take up genealogy find that they encounter download problems when trying to get their genealogy software from the Internet. There are a number of minor, but troubling things that can cause download problems.
The first things you can try to solve your download problem is to use another browser. When I find that Internet Explorer is causing me problems, I'll just shift over to Mozilla from Firefox. (You can easily get that browser online for free online.)
Another common problem is that your firewall may be blocking the incoming download. That's ok; it's just doing the job of protecting you from malicious invasions. Go ahead and temporarily disable it. Many virus protection programs will prompt you and ask if you want to allow a program to download, but if yours doesn't it is easy to disable it for just a few minutes while you download your family tree maker software. If you time it out, you do not have to worry about remembering to put it back up again. The fire wall will just go back up after the allotted time has passed.
If you are still having problems with your download after trying these things, you'll need to check your computer to make sure that you have enough memory for what you are downloading. You'll need about 16 MB of space for the most popular genealogy software, known as Family Tree Maker or FTM. To check your memory, go to My Computer, then check the Properties and you'll be able to see how much memory has been used and how much is left.
One of the things you can do to free up space is eliminate unused programs and empty out your temporary Internet files folder. Deleting any cookies and history is easy to do, just by going to the tools menu and scrolling down to Internet Options. Click under the Browsing History section to delete these types of items.
If you know a bit more about computers, remember to defrag your disc. This will help to compress all our files and make room for new downloads for all you genealogy data. A good disc utility program will be able to optimize your hard drive.
If you've got enough memory, but still can't load your family tree software, then you should check your internet connectivity. The type of connectivity that you have may affect your downloading ability – particularly for dial-up connections where there is a Call-waiting option on the phone line. Incoming calls will disrupt the download and cause problems.
If problems persist, check to make sure that cookies and pop-ups are allowed for the website that you are trying to download your family tree maker program from. This is easily done from your toolbar in most cases.
One of the most popular genealogy software is FTM. It is about 16 MB and would take about 45 minutes to download on a dial-up connection. DSL and broadband would of course, be much, much faster. A free starter version of this software can be found from many websites online.
By following these tips, you should be able to download your favorite genealogy software with no trouble at all!
